A Corpus-based Study on Academic Vocabulary of Aviation Law

Ha, Myoungho

(Silla University)

This study develops Aviation Law Academic Word List (ALAWL) in Aviation Law Textbook Corpus (ALTC) and analyzes the coverage and word families of both General Service List (GSL)/Academic Word List (AWL) and New General Service List (NGSL)/New Academic Word List (NAWL) respectively to compare the usefulness between them. This study also suggests the need of developing field-specific academic vocabulary for learners of aviation law. For this purpose, ALTC that includes about 2 million running words was constructed from 14 textbooks of aviation law. Following Coxhead’s (2000) three criteria - specialized occurrence, range and frequency, this study identified a total of 611 ALAWL out of 2,434 word families of both GSL and AWL, and also selected a total of 564 out of 3,591 word families of both NGSL and NAWL. Secondly, the result of analyzing the coverage and word families of both GSL/AWL and NGSL/NAWL presented that GSL/AWL was better than NGSL/NAWL in spite of the difference in the corpus size. Thirdly, this study strongly suggested that specific academic word lists should be developed in that only 160 out of 570 AWL was identified and 18.04% of all the word lists in ALTC was not covered at all. Finally, ALAWL can be a useful pedagogical tool for teaching and learning aviation law.
